On International Women’s Day, 8th March 2022, the Neuroaid & Research Foundation joined hands with KATHA to host an insightful event on menstrual hygiene at the KATHA LAB SCHOOL in Govindpuri, New Delhi.
Emphasising the significance of practising good menstrual hygiene from an early age, the event aimed to raise awareness about its crucial role in preventing health complications later in life. Shockingly, studies have linked unhealthy menstrual practices to cervical cancer, with India accounting for a staggering 27 percent of global cervical cancer deaths, double the global average according to the World Health Organization.
Rajalakshmi Chandru, Trustee and Chief Functionary of Neuroaid, underscored the event’s importance, noting that inadequate facilities in rural schools lead to one in five girls dropping out once they start menstruating. Therefore, fostering conversations and awareness about menstrual hygiene becomes essential. On this occasion, the foundation distributed sanitary pads to support girls with limited resources, empowering them to advocate for menstrual hygiene within their communities.
Arpita Verma, Assistant Director of Katha, echoed the sentiment, emphasising Katha’s longstanding commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment through initiatives like Katha SRI (Slum Resurgence Initiative). By enabling women to empower themselves and challenging social, cultural, and gender stereotypes, Katha aligns with Neuroaid’s mission to spotlight the importance of menstrual health and hygiene.
The collaborative event marked a significant step toward promoting menstrual hygiene awareness and empowering women to take charge of their health and well-being.
