Paediatric Rehabilitation : A Workshop for students of Banarasi Das Chandiwala Institute of Physiotherapy

Education is a process that involves teaching and learning of concepts, methods, techniques and values. It inculcates a sense of discipline and responsibility in students while equipping them with skill sets that are prerequisites to becoming productive members of society. Organized institutions play a key role in creating platforms for students and professionals to exchange ideas, knowledge, experiences and expertise keeping in mind the ‘overall development of the younger generation’.

In one such endeavour, and a first for NRF, Dr. Sonal Sharma (Lead PT) and Dr. Monika Srivastava (Lead OT) were invited as resource persons to share their knowledge and experiences with 3rd year PT graduates in the field of Paediatric Rehabilitation at Banarasi Das Chandiwala institute of Physiotherapy on 17 th May 2023.

The workshop commenced with an extensive lecture on Cerebral Palsy by Dr. Chanan Goyal, a physiotherapist specializing in Paediatric conditions from Raipur. Dr. Sonal Sharma spoke on Muscular Dystrophy in general and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in particular with special emphasis on clinical presentation. He outlined the details of effective management in rehabilitation of children with muscular dystrophy and followed it up by a short demonstration session. The session was interactive and Dr. Sonal ensured that most students had clarity on the topic through regular revisions of content.

Dr. Monika Srivastava was called upon to give the students an insight into a holistic and multidisciplinary approach towards Paediatric Rehabilitation. Dr. Monika emphasized the need and importance of team work while handling children with special needs. She spoke extensively on the importance of early identification and intervention of developmental delays in clinical practice and highlighted the role of parents/ caretakers in the (re) habilitation process. Dr. Monika also spoke about the core specialty areas of Occupational Therapy and stressed the need to use standardized tests for assessment and follow-up.

A question and answer session was conducted at the end of the workshop to address students’ queries; we found students deeply involved and focused. The workshop provided valuable insights and practical takeaways to help students keep pace with practices in their professional field.

The workshop was meticulously organized by the Director of BCIP, Dr. Nidhi Kalra. All resource persons were given due credit in the form of a letter of appreciation and a potted plant.

The Director of the college was extremely satisfied with the professionalism of the resource persons. She expressed a desire to continue this academic engagement in future on diverse topics, with Team NRF assuring her of continuing with their ‘BACK TO CLASSROOM’ series.
