Running Towards Health: Ramjas International School’s Golden Jubilee Marathon

To celebrate its Golden Jubilee, Ramjas International School held an exciting marathon on July 22, 2023. The event was more than just a race; it was a vibrant display of community spirit, physical fitness, and student accomplishment. Recognizing the physical demands of long-distance running, especially for the young developing bodies, the school integrated physical therapy into both preparation and execution of the marathon, to enhance students’ safety and performance.

The following basic concepts of physical therapy were explained to children in simple terms and through practical demonstrations, rather than lessons to be memorized.

Injury Prevention
The NRF physiotherapy team played a pivotal role in preventing injuries by identifying and addressing potential risk factors. They assessed each student’s posture, gait, and muscle imbalances, designing personalized warm-up routines, stretching exercises and strength-training programs to target common problem areas such as knees, ankles and lower back.

Training Guidance
The team also provided age-appropriate training schedules that gradually built endurance and strength, minimizing the risk of injuries due to overuse. They educated students on proper running techniques, breathing exercises, and the importance of hydration and nutrition, contributing to safer and more effective training.

Early Intervention and Treatment
In the event of an injury, early intervention by qualified physiotherapists significantly reduced recovery time and prevented minor issues from becoming chronic problems. They provided immediate care, including first aid and initial treatment recommendations, and developed rehabilitation plans to facilitate a swift return to running.

Implementation in School Marathons

  • Pre-Marathon Screening
NRF’s physiotherapists conducted pre-marathon screenings to identify students who may be at higher risk of injury. This allowed for tailored interventions and adjustments to individual training plans.
  • On-Site Support
Having physiotherapists present on the day of the marathon, ensured immediate attention to any injuries that occurred. They provided taping, massage, and other treatments to alleviate pain.
  • Post-Marathon Care
After the event, physiotherapists helped with cool-down routines and provided guidance on recovery techniques. Follow-up sessions were scheduled for those experiencing pain or discomfort.

Benefits for Students

  • Enhanced Performance
With proper training and guidance, students improved their running efficiency and endurance, leading to better performance.
  • Reduced Injury Rates
Preventive measures and early intervention significantly lowered the instance of injuries, ensuring that more students could participate safely and with passion.
  • Lifelong Health Habits
By learning about proper exercise techniques, injury prevention, and the importance of physical fitness, students developed healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

Incorporating physiotherapy into school marathons not only protects students from injuries, but also enhances their overall experience and performance. Schools that prioritize student health and safety through such measures, demonstrate a commitment to fostering a positive and supportive environment for physical activity.
