The “Run for Ability” event, a Sports Activity Cum Marathon for the Specially-Abled, epitomised the ethos of inclusivity and resilience, inspired by the words of renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, who famously said, “Disability need not be an obstacle to success.” This event, held on December 25 th 2022, at the Sector 12, Haryana Sports Complex in Faridabad, served as a platform to celebrate the diverse capabilities of individuals under the umbrella term ‘Specially-abled.’ According to the November 2018 report of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), approximately 2.2% of Indians were identified as having some form of disability.

Empowering through Engagement
The event kicked off with an “Open Court for Divyang” a unique initiative aimed at fostering dialogue and understanding between the Divyaang community and the government. Participants seized the opportunity to voice their concerns and grievances directly to the Disability Commissioner of Haryana. The one-on-one question and answer session provided a platform for meaningful interaction, benefiting many individuals who were able to articulate their issues and seek assurances of support from the authorities.
Ranjit Bhati’s Remarkable Journey
During the event, one participant, Ranjit Bhati, emerged as a beacon of resilience and determination. As a National and Paralympic Gold Medallist, his presence inspired many. However, it was his vocal advocacy for change that truly left a lasting impression. Ranjit seized the moment to raise his concerns directly to the Commissioner. His impassioned plea for action did not go unnoticed. The Commissioner, recognizing the importance of addressing Ranjit’s concerns, promptly ordered an inquiry, pledging swift resolution and support from the appropriate government departments. This incident underscored the power of advocacy and the commitment of the authorities to uphold the rights of the specially-abled community.
NRF’s Commitment to Care
Amidst the excitement of the event, the NRF Physiotherapy team stood as pillars of support and care. When Ranjit Bhati experienced pain due to muscular spasm, the team sprang into action, providing immediate relief through stretching therapy and appropriate relaxants. This timely intervention epitomised NRF’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of all participants.
Understanding and addressing Challenges
The event provided a poignant glimpse into the lives of the participants, many of whom shared stories of resilience in the face of adversity. From individuals affected by poliomyelitis to those with congenital defects or disabilities resulting from road traffic accidents, each participant had a unique journey to share. Despite facing significant challenges, their unwavering determination and passion for sports were palpable.
As physiotherapists engaged with the participants, they identified common challenges such as chronic low back pain resulting from prolonged wheelchair use. Through personalised guidance and demonstrations, participants were empowered to manage their conditions effectively. Techniques such as active exercises, stretching, and weight shifting were imparted to alleviate discomfort and improve mobility. Additionally, the NRF team provided immediate assistance during emergencies, such as ankle injuries, ensuring prompt treatment and relief for participants in distress.
Promoting Safety and Well-being
Observations made during the competition highlighted the physical demands placed on participants, particularly wheelchair athletes. Continuous pushing of wheelchairs led to palm bruises, while prolonged exertion resulted in upper limb fatigue and soft tissue injuries. The NRF team jumped into action, applying bandages to wheelchair participants to prevent further injury. Moreover, participants were educated on relaxation techniques and injury prevention strategies to safeguard their well-being during sports activities.
Acknowledgment and Gratitude
The President of Nai Udaann expressed deep satisfaction with NRF’s services, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the event’s success. Special recognition was extended to Rajalakshmi Chandru, Trustee and Chief Functionary of the Foundation, for her unwavering support and dedication to the cause. NRF expressed gratitude to collaborating institutions, including the Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Physiotherapy and GD Goenka Physiotherapy Institute, for their invaluable support in ensuring seamless execution of the event.
