Phases of Post-Surgical Rehab: The are 4 Stages of Rehab

1. The Recovery Stage: This phase starts after the patient is discharged from the hospital post-surgery. In this stage the pain and swellings are the focus points to resolve. Physiotherapists provide gentle manual therapy to restore joint motion, simple exercises are done to regain muscle functions.
2. The Repair Stage: In this stage the joint is mobilised to get relief from pain and swelling. Strengthening of weak muscles is also started with a range of motion exercises. Manual therapy is also used to restore full range of motion of the joint. Physiotherapists also start with balance and proprioception exercises at this stage.
3. The Strength Stage: At this stage Physiotherapists will start working on your strength, sufficient for hard exercises and restore the independent movement.
4. The Function Stage: In this stage the Physiotherapist will help you to do more challenging, balancing and proprioception exercises specially designed to meet your functional goals. The program is customised to meet an individual’s lifestyle & physical demands.
