CONDITIONS: Stroke, Facial paralysis, Spinal Cord Injury, Head Injuries, Muscle Disorders, Nerve Disorders and Injuries, Degenerative Diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, GBS, Multiple Sclerosis, amongst others.

Role of occupational therapy

Occupational therapy helps regain, enhance and maintain:

  1. Gross motor andfine motor control throughfunctional activities
  2. Endurance through graded exercises, guidance on work-rest balance, work simplification and energy conservation techniques
  3. Functional mobility through age-appropriate functional transfers in and out of bed, chair, etc., including wheelchair transfers and prescriptions of suitable adaptations and devices
  4. Body part alignmentthrough movement, positioning and prescribing/fabricating of upper limb orthoses(preventing contractures and deformities)
  5. Sensory awareness and discrimination through re-education and desensitization protocols
  6. Perception skills such as body awareness, spatial relations and position in space, and motor planning through age appropriate and purposeful and functional activities
  7. Cognition domains such as attention, orientation, memory, and problem solving through age appropriate and purposeful functional activities
  8. Balance and coordination including manual dexterity through age-appropriate functional activities among various parts of the body and between the body and its external environment
  9. Tone and posture by guiding patients on proper positioning that needs to be followed throughout the day and various weight-bearing and weight-shifting activities
  10. Oral motor control techniques and modifying feeding patterns (Dysphagia management)
  1. Psychosocial (emotional) well-being by facilitating return to daily routine activities, school/work, play, leisure and recreation tasks, communications and social interactions using therapeutic strategies, adaptive devices & techniques and environmental modifications
  2. Caretaker support through counselling and encouraging active involvement in setting goals.

Additonal roles of an occupational therapist

  • Prescribing and fabricating splints and upper limb orthoses.
  • Prescribing and fabricating low-cost assistive devices and communication boards.
  • Prescribing assistive technology devices (high tech).
  • Assisting in positioning/ seating persons with disability including wheelchair selection process, modified chairs, standing frames.
