Neuro Rehabilitation
Role of physiotherapy in neurological disorder
Neurological physiotherapy involves the treatment of people with movement and function disorders that have originated from problems within the body’s nervous and neuromuscular systems.
These conditions often manifest themselves as muscle weakness, poor balance and coordination, uncontrolled muscle spasm and tremors, loss of functions and decreased sensations.
Common neurological conditions include:
- Functional Neurological Disorders
- Stroke, CVA or TIA
- Spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Peripheral Neuropathies
- Muscular dystrophy
- Cerebral palsy.
- Motor neuron diseases
- Facial paralysis
Depending on the nature of impairment, physiotherapy treatment may include:
- Passive Limb Exercises: For patients who are unable to move their body parts
- Positioning / Splinting: correct limb positioning to ensure that the joints don’t tighten and prevent secondary complications
- Bed Exercises: to stretch and strengthen the muscles with shifting techniques
- Breathing and Circulation Exercises: to prevent respiratory and vascular complications such as chest infection and DVTs
- Mobilization: assistance to move safely in bed, sit up, stand and walk
- Weight bearing exercises: Techniques for joint approximation
- Mobility Aids: prescription, advice and instructions on how to safely use a walking frame, or other walking aids as per individual requirements
- Discharge Planning: information regarding any necessary equipment that the patient may require at home
- Tailored Exercise: Customized exercises to build strength, endurance, coordination and Balance to ensure the patient’s independence to carry out their day to day activities
Assistive devices
Parallel bars- Parallel bars are devices used in physical rehabilitation therapy to assist individuals to re-learn to walk and for gait training, as well as to regain balance, strength and a range of motions & mobility.
Balance board- is utilized by physical therapist to assist users in improving balance, motor coordination skills and core strength.
Physio ball- are used for balance and co-ordination training, strengthening, gross motor and proprioceptive activities.
Standing frame- Helps assist patients to stand with support.
Advance equipment for neuro rehabilitation
A. Un weigh harness system- is very useful and helpful for weight bearing while standing and helps in initiating the walking pattern (gait)
B. Physio tilt table- is useful in quadriplegic patients and many other neurological conditions to make patients stand in various degrees against gravity
C. Postural balance system- Is fully loaded with virtual training programs and balance and coordination training techniques
D. Active and passive cycle- which is again loaded with various programs associated with upper limb and lower limb training through virtual reality
E. RoboC. Postural balance system- Is fully loaded with virtual training programs and balance and coordination training techniques
F. Functional electrical stimulator
G. Sense-Balance board
H. Pablo for virtual training and movement therapy
I. Active and passive Thera-trainer
