Changing the narrative: Enhancing Parkinson’s Disease Awareness

Comprehensive Rehabilitation play a vital role in supporting people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) enabling them to choose management strategies, prioritize and address the challenges they face over the course of the condition. To facilitate and promote 2025 theme of World Parkinson’s Day which was “Driving change through Collaboration’’, The Neuroaid and Research Foundation (NRF) launched a month-long awareness campaign on April 11, 2025, to amplify awareness about Parkinson’s disease and foster initiatives for providing an inclusive environment.

While a vast number of people live with this disease, there is still a lack of awareness in our community. NRF shared 5 short informative videos on various platforms of social media on how to navigate through Parkinson‘s Disease, offering helpful tips and strategies to maximize quality of life.

Dr Rajinder K. Dhamija, Director, Institute of Human Behaviour and Applied Sciences (IBHAAS), Delhi and Trustee, NRF outlined the disease process and its outcomes in long run. He emphasized on the multidisciplinary approach to manage Parkinson’s disease. Fatigue is one of the most common, although frequently unrecognized, symptom in Parkinson’s disease that significantly worsens the quality of life. By implementing energy conservation techniques, individuals with PD can better manage fatigue, maintain participation in meaningful activities, and improve their well-being. Dr Akshay Kumar Joshi, Senior Occupational Therapist, NRF provided a roadmap on how to prioritize tasks and manage fatigue inducing factors.

As interventions for Parkinson’s Disease is heterogenous, NRF provided online multidisciplinary consultations for Parkinson’s disease management, offering convenient access to specialized care. These virtual consultations brought together various healthcare professionals like physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and psychological counsellor allowing for coordinated care, with better patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans.

The Neuroaid and Research Foundation is committed to make a significant difference in the rehabilitation of people who are affected by a neuro disability. Through this campaign it aimed to drive impactful rehabilitation initiatives while facilitating sharing of knowledge and resources to advance the understanding and management of Parkinson’s Disease.
